KBRIN SGD Program Assessment

The Small Genome Discovery Program replicates the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Science Education Alliance (SEA) Phage Hunters Advancing Genomics and Evolutionary Science (PHAGES) program within the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Data from the assessment of the PHAGES program was recently published (Jordan et al., 2014) and showed significant gains in student performance and retention. In order to continue to add to the body of assessment data, the SGD program will continue to participate in the pre- and post-course SEA-CURE (Science Education Alliance Classroom Undergraduate Research Experience) surveys.

Observed Student Gains

A comparison of student gains, over a broad range of performance criteria, is shown between Summer Undergraduate Research Programs (SURE), Non-research courses (CURE) and the SEA PHAGES program.
