KBRIN SGD Support Center

The KBRIN advanced it’s bioinformatics infrastructure by establishing a training and support center for the Small Genome Discovery (SGD) program at Western Kentucky University in 2014. This center serves as a focal point to train and support the SGD programs at 15 universities and community colleges across the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The SGD Support Center (SGDSC) complements the two core sequencing facilities at the University of Kentucky and University of Louisville.

SGD Support Center Services

The SGDSC will:

- conduct workshops to train faculty from new network schools in the implementation of the SGD program into their curriculum.

- archive all phages generated at the network schools. These will serve as an accessible resource for larger comparative research projects.

- facilitate the sequencing and finishing of genomes for phage DNA from each network institution.

- provide technical support for the methods and protocols used in phage isolation and purification, DNA sequence analysis, genome annotation, and genome submission for publication in GenBank.

- maintain a wiki to encourage communication between faculty and students within the SGD network.

- sponsor an annual SGD Symposium for student and faculty presentation of their research results.
